His controversial Best Picture Oscar-winning film Crash, had ambitions to represent the complexities of racism and race relations in America, and failed. But there was a gloss to it, a pretence of depth appealing enough to distract from the fact that he was ultimately telling a rather shallow, over-simplistic story. With his latest film, Third Person , Haggis much less effectively repeats the trick.Once again, he draws on an ensemble cast and the device of intertwining plots to tackle themes of love, trust, and guilt. Liam Neeson stars as Michael, a Pulitzer-winning novelist whose last few books have paled in comparison to his first.
