Michael "Jay" Cochran has just left the Navy after 12 years. He's not quite sure what he's going to do, except that he knows he wants a holiday. He decides to visit Tiburon Mendez, a powerful but shady Mexican businessman who he once flew to Alaska for a hunting trip. Arriving at the Mendez mansion in Mexico, he is immediately surprised by the beauty and youth of Mendez' wife Miryea. Their attraction to each other is undeniable, but Cochran is aware that Mendez is a powerful, vindictive, and very possessive man who does not tolerate betrayal.
In ancient Korea, a king trains his son as a warrior in order to overcome a strain of inordinate gentleness he sees in him. His intentions are shown to have succeeded when the boy, now king, banishes a poet friend of his for improperly criticizing him. In modern Korea, when a girl is killed for no reason by her teacher, her father vows to get revenge for that someday. The killer has vanished over the border into China, and the father has remarried and had a son, whom he trains to carry out his revenge.

Tibey (Anthony Quinn), a powerful Mexican businessman is expecting a visit from his American friend Jay Cochran (Kevin Costner), a recently retired Navy fighter pilot. Little does Tibey know that his young trophy wife, Miryea (Madeleine Stowe), will fall for his dashing friend, finding the passion with him that is missing from her marriage. Eventually, the lovers have to face the consequences of betraying Tibey, thus beginning a violent cycle of revenge.
