Caro and Jeunet have a flair for visual communication and comedy that overflows in DELICATESSEN, keeping viewers engaged in the film even when the style seems to swallow the plot. In one of the most mimicked scenes of the 1990s (most notably in commercials), the directors brilliantly choreograph a bizarre event in which the separate activities of each of the hotel's tenants--a couple making love in a squeaky bed, a man painting his ceiling, a woman playing the cello--become hilariously rhythmic and synchronized. This scene spawned an entirely new cinematic language, making DELICATESSEN one of the most auspicious directorial debuts of the '90s.

This dark tale is played out in a brilliantly designed, glorious surreal alternate world reminiscent of the works of director Terry Gilliam, who co-presented the film's American release. Like Gilliam, co-directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro hail from an animation background, and have a fondness for extravagant visuals, absurdist plot twists, and a sense of humor that combines sharp satire with broad slapstick and gross-out imagery. This mixture may displease the weak of stomach, but those attuned to the film's sensibility will be delighted by the obvious technical virtuosity and wicked sense of humor.

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet has a very specific, immediately recognizable visual style as seen in films like Delicatessen , Amelie and his most recent feature, Micmacs. He takes quite a bit of time between features, and since his 1991 feature debut with Delicatessen he has made only six films, and one English-language film: the not terribly good Alien Resurrection. (I think "not terribly good" is being pretty charitable to that movie, actually.) Now Jeunet is set to make another English-language film, and it will also be his first in 3D. Given that Jeunet is all about visuals, the prospect of seeing his first foray into 3D is more tempting than would be the case from may other directors.
