Having defeated the Joker, Batman now faces the Penguin - a warped and deformed individual who is intent on being accepted into Gotham society. Crooked businessman Max Schreck is coerced into helping him become Mayor of Gotham and they both attempt to expose Batman in a different light. Earlier however, Selina Kyle, Max's secretary, is thrown from the top of a building and is transformed into Catwoman - a mysterious figure who has the same personality disorder as Batman. Batman must attempt to clear his name, all the time deciding just what must be done with the Catwoman.
In director Tim Burton's sequel to his successful BATMAN (1989), the Caped Crusador (Michael Keaton) is pitted against the demented, ravenous Penguin (Danny DeVito), a pitiful, orphaned psychopathic freak who once went on a baby-killing spree, and a "power" hungry capitalist villain Max Shreck (Christopher Walken). fearlessly and fabulously played by Michelle Pfeiffer). She is the slinky, sharp-clawed alter-ego of Shreck's secretary Selina. Batman must overcome his own dark past, and his present love entanglements, to rid Gotham of it's evil enemies, this time with even more intricately designed sets and tongue-in-cheek humor, making BATMAN RETURNS an action-packed, but darkly fun adventure.

Oswald Cobblepot (DeVito) was bij zijn geboorte zo afzichtelijk lelijk, dat hij door zijn ouders in een mandje het water op is gegooid. Hij is opgegroeid tussen de pinguïns in het riool. Samen met een corrupte zakenman verzinnen ze een plan om de stad over te nemen en Batman (Keaton) van moord te beschuldigen. We are not, by any stretch of the imagination, Tim Burton haters. One very senior Playlist member of staff considers "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" one of the greatest movies ever made.
