Madonna told a reporter for the London Daily Star on Tuesday that she had no idea how critics reacted to her new movie, W.E. , which screened earlier in the day at the Venice Film Festival out of competition. “I haven’t read any reviews. I’m afraid to,” she said. She may have had good reason to be afraid. Her last film, Filth and Wisdom , was universally clobbered by them. Her latest is faring somewhat better — but not by much. Daily Variety critic Leslie Felperin remarked that the movie, about Wallis Simpson, the wife King Edward VIII, was “burdened with risible dialogue and weak performances” and then went on to fault almost everything else about the movie including montage sequences that seem “like something out of a how-to-make-a-musicvideo handbook from 1991.” Xan Brooks in Britain’s Guardian argued that the film is even worse than Filth and Wisdom . “What an extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film this is,” he writes.
