Robert DeNiro and Jessica Lange are the most impossible couple. He's a failed lawyer. She's a common waitress. Together they get in a downward spiral, as they can't seem to deal with there problems. The lawyer just failed winning a case in court against a famous boxing organiser and he wants revenge by catching the organizer on his own territory: boxing. Although he knows nothing about boxing, with his fine talk he finds the help of a couple of people like the brother of his new enemy. But the relationship with his waitress doesn't make things double as hard.
A New York lawyer turned promoter for the world of boxing is willing to do whatever hustling it takes to get to the big time.
Het verhaal gaat over de louche advocaat Harry Fabian die zó charmant onbeholpen kan reageren, dat barjuffrouw Helen Nasseros al begint te glimmen zodra hij z'n gezicht laat zien. Na wat heen en weer geflirt over de bar, staan ze even later op straat te vrijen. Als Helen weer met beide benen op de grond staat, is ze zo onvoorzichtig om Harry haar spaargeld te lenen. Hij kan daarmee een boksgala organiseren, een initiatief dat door de plaatselijke mafia onder leiding van mafiaboss Boom Boom Grossman echter niet op waarde wordt geschat.
