Daigo Kobayashi is een jonge getrouwde cellist. Zijn orkest wordt echter opgeheven, waardoor hij geen hoop meer heeft op een baan of hoop of een carrière, besluit hij met zijn vrouw te verhuizen naar zijn geboorteplaats. Hier wordt hij een nokanshi, een begrafenisondernemer die de lijken wast en aankleedt en hen in hun kist naar de volgende wereld brengt. Zijn vrouw en andere kennissen minachten, maar door de dagelijkse confrontatie met dood, begint Daigo eindelijk in te zien waar het in het leven om draait.

Soon after buying an expensive cello, Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) learns that his orchestra is dissolving. Daigo and his wife move back to his hometown in northern Japan, where he answers an ad for what he thinks is a travel agency, but is, in actuality, a mortuary. As he learns and carries out the rituals used in preparing the dead for their final rest, Daigo finds his true calling in life.

Upon discovering that he will actually be preparing the bodies of the recently deceased for their trip to the afterlife, Daigo accepts the position as gatekeeper between life and death and gradually gains a greater appreciation for life. But while Daigo's wife and friends universally despise his new line of work, he takes a great amount of pride in the fact that he is helping to ensure that the dead receive a proper send-off from this state of being.
