Krank (Daniel Emilfork), who cannot dream, kidnaps young children to steal their dreams. One (Ron Perlman), a former whale hunter who is as strong as a horse, sets forth to search for Denree, his little brother who was kidnapped by Krank's men. Helped by young Miette (Judith Vittet), he soon arrives in La Cite des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children).

In THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, an imaginative fantasy from the creators of DELICATESSEN, a prematurely aging mad scientist named Krank (Daniel Emilfork) kidnaps children so he can steal their dreams. French directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet once again prove their technical prowess with this dark fairy tale, which features outstanding performances from its youthful cast (most notably Vittet). As is the case with DELICATESSEN, however, their genius in constructing a highly artificial, beautiful, believable world threatens to overshadow the story. But even the fantastic sets cannot compare to the bizarre spectacles that Jeunet and Caro dream up. In one unforgettable scene, a pair of evil Siamese twin sisters prepare dinner, their four arms working perfectly in sync--one holding vegetables for another to chop while a third stirs the soup and a fourth scratches their collective itches. Frequent David Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti creates the chilling, circusy musical score that adds to the film's magic.

'Amelie' Helmer Also Developing Drama 'Red Leaves' "Micmacs" may have been a minor disappointment from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet --it's an enjoyable, but very slight piece of work--but as the man behind " Delicatessen ," " The City of Lost Children ," " Amelie " and the under-rated " A Very Long Engagement ," we're always excited to hear that the French helmer is working on something new. Never the most prolific of directors, word's been fairly quiet in the last two years, other than the director briefly being courted for the "Snow White" project now being made by Tarsem, but now news has come in that the director…
