A would-be hockey player who unfortunately can't skate transforms his slap-shot into a 400-yard golf drive in this slapstick comedy. Joining the pro tour to win enough money to get his grandma's house out of hock, this unsportsmanlike sportsman enrages the staid establishment with his on-course shenanigans.

Throttling everyone from a helpless caddy to game show host Bob Barker during the course of his 90-day quest to amass prize money, Happy also wins the sport a legion of new fans with his in-your-face style. Guiding him on his quest is a whimsical retired pro who lost his hand to an alligator (Carl Weathers) and an attractive public relations woman charmed by Happy's antics (Julie Bowen). Opposing him, however, is sneering hotshot Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), who will do anything to win his championship jacket and see Happy fail.

Happy Gilmore heeft een droom om ijshockeyspeler te worden. Het grote probleem is echter dat hij niet kan schaatsen, en veldhockey is te soft voor hem. Dan blijkt dat zijn oma geen belasting heeft betaald en haar huis wordt afgepakt. Happy belooft het geld te verzamelen om het huis terug te kopen. Als hij op een golfclub komt realiseert hij zich dat hij zijn harde slagen ook kan gebruiken bij deze sport, ook al is hij duidelijk niet de persoon om in een dure club te komen. Samen met de coach Chubbs Peterson probeert hij nu geld te verdienen voor zijn oma maar kampioen Shooter McGavin staat hem in de weg.
