Ellen Page and Rainn Wilson star in a heavy handed superhero black comedyReasonably sound comedy instincts are wedded to something bizarrely charmless and heavy-handed in this superhero comedy satire without the fizz of Matthew Vaughn 's Kick-Ass . With its almost-funny ideas and gigglingly misjudged use of violence, it reminded me of another "loser" comedy, Jody Hill 's Observe and Report . Rainn Wilson (from the Us TV version of The Office ) plays Frank, a sad-sack whose improbably gorgeous wife Sarah ( Liv Tyler ) runs off with a local gangster, played by Kevin Bacon . Frank takes vengeance on the wrongdoers of this world by kitting himself out in an absurd red costume, calling himself the Crimson Bolt. He acquires a star-struck sidekick called Boltie, played by Ellen Page . As black comedy, it works reasonably well some of the time, with plenty of black but not much comedy.Rating: 2/5Action and adventureComedyDramaPeter Bradshawguardian.
