When word reaches two elderly best friends that someone in their tiny Irish village has won the national lottery, they go to great lengths to find the winner so they can share the wealth. When they discover the "lucky" winner, Ned Devine, they find he has died of shock upon discovering his win. Not wanting the money to go to waste, the village enters a pact to pretend Ned is still alive by having another man pose as him, and then to divide the money between them.
A comedy about the inhabitants of Tulley More, a small Irish town with a population of fifty-two and dwindling. When Jackie and Michael discover that someone in their town has won the national lottery, they intend to uncover the lucky individual and talk him into sharing the jackpot with them. Trouble arises when they discover it's good old Ned Devine, and no longer is he one of the living. The citizens must band together and fool the authorities into believing that Ned is still alive, in order for them to receive the money and share it amongst themselves.
Just as the charming British film The Full Monty told the story of simple men willing to shed their clothes for money, Waking Ned Devine is the story of older Irish men who pursue money and take off their clothes. Commercial director Kirk Jones makes his feature directing debut with a story about a small town in Ireland called Tulaigh More, where one of their 52 inhabitants wins the lotto jackpot of nearly seven million pounds. What ensues is a community coming together in hopes of getting his money to split 51 ways. What they learn is the importance of friendship and the true value of money. Jackie O'Shea leest in de krant dat in zijn regio iemand een grote prijs met de loterij heeft gewonnen. Het dorp waar hij woont met 51 inwoners is het enige dorp in die regio, dus hij denkt dat 1 van hen de winnaar moet zijn. Hij wil erachter komen wie de winnaar is, om zo zelf ook wat geld te krijgen. Hij nodigt iedereen uit, die een loterijkaartje had gekocht, om bij hem te komen eten. Op het etentje probeert hij erachter te komen wie er gewonnen heeft. Hij merkt dat het niemand is die hij uitgenodigd heeft, maar Ned Devine is niet gekomen. Hij gaat op zoek naar Ned.
