Documentary-style drama showing the events that lead up to the tragic incident on January 30, 1972 in the Northern Ireland town of Derry when a protest march led by civil rights activist Ivan Cooper was fired upon by British troops, killing 13 protesters and wounding 14 more.

In documentary style, Paul Greengrass' BLOODY SUNDAY, which chronicles the events of January 30, 1972 in Derry, Ireland, is filmed with gritty gray realness. Surrounding a peaceful protest march staged in contest to British laws that permitted internment without trial, the film charts the progress of the march from the night before it to the night following it. As the final organizing of the march takes place that morning, MP Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt) rushes from the street where police barriers are being erected to his office where he fields a string of urgent phone calls. Meanwhile Major General Ford (Tim Pig...

ott-Smith) arranges for a heavily armed troop of commandos in fatigues and face paint to be ready to intercept the march if it turns violent. A third persona, Kevin McCorry (Allan Gildea), is a young lad with a prison record who believes in the cause of the march but wants to avoid conflict and any real trouble. As the march proceeds, and chaos ensues, the British militia opens fire onto the unarmed crowds, shooting 27 and killing 13 in one of the most shocking instances of excessive force in Irish history, ending any hope of nonviolent resolution, and stoking the IRA.

Charles McDougall's Sunday is one of two films (the other being Paul Greengrass' Bloody Sunday) that were made in 2002 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of January 30, 1972, a date commonly known as Bloody Sunday. Originally aired on BBC television network, the film attempts to give a fact-based portrayal of the events, which began as a civil rights protest in response to some Catholic leaders being jailed without due process and ended in a gruesome massacre, with 14 Catholics shot dead and 14 others injured at the hands of the British military. After its television debut, Sunday went on to win the top prize at...

Zondag 30 januari 1972, Derry, Noord-Ierland.

Artist of the week 163: Duncan Campbell

A timely film about EU top dog Hans Tietmeyer, a German economist, is the latest slippery biopic from the Irish artist, whose past subjects include car-making conman John DeLorean "I'm not putting this accurately, but approximately," explains the apologetically unreliable narrator in Duncan Campbell's latest documentary, Arbeit, hinged around the influential German economist Hans Tietmeyer. The same might be said for all the Irish artist's slippery biopics, which have tackled such fiery characters as Irish republican Bernadette Devlin, who once punched a Tory home secretary in the face for suggesting British soldiers had only fired in self-defence on Bloody Sunday , and John DeLorean , the dashing but dastardly entrepreneur behind the eponymous sports car that took Michael J Fox back to the future. With old newsreels, photography and commercials, Campbell builds contrary tales of people, time and place, in which the picture is forever shifting depending on who is holding the camera.
