On a beautiful cloudless day a young couple celebrate their reunion with a picnic. Joe has planned a postcard-perfect afternoon in the English countryside with his partner, Claire. But as Joe and Claire prepare to open a bottle of champagne, their idyll comes to an abrupt end. A hot air balloon drifts into the field, obviously in trouble. Recalling the day's events at dinner with his friends Robin and Rachel, Joe reveals the impact the accident has had on his battered psyche. Ironically the balloon eventually lands safely, the boy unscathed. But fate has far more unpleasant things in store for Joe. Going to retrieve the body of the fallen man with fellow rescuer Jed Parry, for example, turns out to be a very bad move. This psychological thriller from director Roger Michell (NOTTING HILL) explores how one experience can affect many people in different ways while also examining the subtleties of love and relationships. Craig is superb as Joe, a natural-born leader and rational college professor whose life is turned upside down both by his inability to prevent the accident, and by his interactions with Jed. Ifans is super creepy as the disturbed stalker, a far cry from his turn as the lovable goof Spike in NOTTING HILL.

body, Joe is joined by another would-be rescuer, Jed (Rhys Ifans, who co-starred in the director's Notting Hill), who suggests they kneel and pray. Joe, strictly a rationalist, does so reluctantly. Joe tries to get back to his routine, but he can't get the incident out of his head, and he is haunted by feelings of guilt and by ruminations about how things might have gone differently. Jed calls him out of the blue and urgently suggests that they meet. Jed soon makes it clear that he feels a connection to Joe that goes beyond their shared participation in the traumatic accident. He begins turning up everywhere Joe goes, sitting outside Joe's apartment at night. Worse yet, he insists that Joe is somehow sending him secret messages and leading him on. This potentially dangerous stalker begins to put a strain on Joe and Claire. As their relationship starts to disintegrate, Joe finds himself being pushed further and further from the rational, secure life he lived before that fateful day.

De romantische picknick van Joe en Claire neemt een dramatische wending wanneer een groep ballonvaarders in nood geraakt en Joe samen met een paar andere aanwezigen een helpende hand moet bieden. On the other is Dad, who, when he bobs up, turns out to have taken up with a new-age religious sect whose leadership demand that he glugs down pailfuls of salt water, abstains from sex, and hands over a tithe of his property.
