Just before Christmas, department store clerk Steve Mason meets big spending customer Connie Ennis, really a commercial spy. He unmasks her but lets her go, which gets him fired. They end up on a date, which doesn't sit well with Connie's steady suitor, Carl, but delights her son Timmy, who doesn't want Carl for a step-dad. Standard (if sweet) romantic complications follow.
A widowed mother, Connie (Janet Leigh), is set to exchange vows with an old friend (Wendell Corey) in this Christmas story. But, eager to give her boy a very merry Christmas, Connie allows a charming sales clerk, Steve (Robert Mitchum), to buy her son a toy train set--much to her fiancé's chagrin. In this game of hearts, Steve understands that to win the widow's heart, his must first win over her son. Based on the story by John D. Weaver, Holiday Affair was remade for television in 1996.
