Duke E. Gifford (John Wayne) is luitenant-commandant op onderzeeër Thunderfish. Hun missie tijdens WO II is het evacueren van kinderen in vijandige gebieden. Ondertussen is hij ook verwikkeld in een privé-zaak: hij is gescheiden van Mary Stuart en verwijt zichzelf nu dat hij Mary alleen liet toen hun zoontje geboren werd, die kort daarna overleed.
