A merchant marine captain, rescued from the Chinese Communists by local visitors, is "shanghaied" into transporting the whole village to Hong Kong on an ancient paddle steamer.

Kapitein Wilder wordt door de onderdrukte bevolking van een Chinees dorpje benaderd. Onder hen bevindt zich ook Cathy Grainger, de dochter van een Amerikaanse dokter die in China gevangen zit. Ze zijn op de vlucht voor de communisten en vragen Wilder hun bootje, de 'Chiku Shan', naar Hong Kong te begeleiden, waar ze dan eindelijk van hun vrijheid kunnen genieten. ts of the panoramic scenery, and it is an absolute delight to watch Wayne and Bacall, so reminiscent of Bogie and Hepburn in THE AFRICAN QUEEN.
