In de 19de eeuw reist de Franse zijdesmokkelaar Herve Joncour (Pitt) naar Japan om zijn smokkelwaar te verzamelen. Daar ontmoet hij een mooie Japanse vrouw bij één van zijn handelskoopmannen.
