The Lost Continent is a crazy-quilt of a film, with chunks of several unrelated plotlines sewn together willy nilly. Eric Porter plays Lansen, the captain of a tramp steamer who has agreed to deliver contraband dynamite for a hefty price. His passengers are a polyglot of the good, the bad and the worse. Kapitein Lansen vertrekt met de oude schuit 'Carita' op een laatste trip die hem het grote fortuin moet opleveren. Aan boord bevindt zich immers een uiterst gevaarlijke lading die ontploft bij het minste contact met water. De passagiers zijn van uiteenlopend pluimage en zijn allen op de loop voor hun verleden. De gammele boot komt in een storm terecht en het ganse gezelschap moet het schip verlaten. Ze bevinden zich in de Sargossa Zee, een gebied vol monsters uit een wereld waar de tijd stil bleef staan.
