Popeye arriveert in het vervallen aan zee gelegen dorp 'Sweet Haven'. Hij ontmoet daar Wimpy, een man bezeten van hamburgers, Olive Oyl, de toekomstige liefde van zijn leven, en Bluto, een grote, gemene piraat die er op uit is om 'Sweet Haven' zonder enige reden te laten boeten. Popeye vindt ook zijn lang verloren gewaande Pappy te midden van dit alles.

ze is that the shipwreck has brought him unexpectedly close to his final destination. In bringing his own distinct vision to E. C. Segar's legendary hero, Altman creates an atmosphere that is breezy, loose, and filled with slapstick shenanigans. Williams portrays Popeye with a physically comic flair that is both honest and energetic--as do the rest of the cast members, including frequent Altman contributors Duvall, Paul Dooley, and David Arkin. Harry Nilsson's songs add to the lighthearted affair, making Popeye an enjoyable family viewing experience all around.

ly, Popeye and Olive are brought together by Swee' Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling, and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). Director Robert Altman in no way tempered his trademark style for this big-budget family opus, crowding the screen with a variety of characters and allowing his cast to overlap as much dialogue as they want.
