Latina, een stadje opgericht door de fascisten van Mussolini net buiten Rome, jaren '60. De jonge Accio groeit op in een arme familie en krijgt al snel fascistische sympathieën, al was het maar omdat hij ze in zijn omgeving veel tegenkomt. Zijn oudere broer Manrico is aan de ene kant zijn grote held en voorbeeld, maar aan de andere kant is dat een 'verderfelijke' communist, evenals diens vriendin die een speciaal plaatsje in Accios hart heeft. De relatie tussen de broers wordt desalniettemin sterker naarmate ze opgroeien.
