A bag full of symbolic folklore about werewolves, or, rather, their sexual connotation. Granny tells her granddaughter Rosaleen strange, disturbing tales about innocent maidens falling in love with handsome, heavily eyebrowed strangers with a smoldering look in their eyes; about sudden disappearances of spouses when the moon is round & the wolves are howling in the woods; about babies found inside stork eggs, in a stork nest high up a tree; etc., etc. Of course the story of Little Red Ridinghood is also present, with a very handsome he-wolf! (And of course this he-wolf consumes Grandmother, but 'consumes' Little ...

Red Ridinghood). All the stories are somehow reducible to loss of innocence, and fear of/hunger for (a newly acquired sense of) sexuality; their Freudian character is mirrored in their dreamlike shapes. This movie is not really a horror movie; it's more a multiple tale about growing up into adolescence.

The second directorial effort from Irish director Neil Jordan (THE CRYING GAME), THE COMPANY OF WOLVES is a psychologically themed retelling of Little Red Riding Hood from a Freudian and slightly feminist angle. Angela Lansbury is Grandma, who tells her granddaughter strange stories of handsome yet heavily eyebrowed strange men, spouses who disappear during the full moon, and storks and eggs. Also starring David Warner (TIME AFTER TIME, TIME BANDITS) and Stephen Rea (THE CRYING GAME).

Company of Wolves is Little Red Riding Hood for the Alien generation. Sheltered 13-year-old Sarah Patterson, living on the edge of a foreboding woods, is visited by her grandmother Angela Lansbury. The old lady delights in telling Sarah the most horrific stories, usually involving what happens to little girls if they trust wolves--the actual, rather than symbolic kind. Later on, Sarah sets out through the woods to visit her grandmother. She makes the acquaintance of a seductive young huntsman (Micha Bergese), who turns out to be.....well, what big teeth he's got. nging from the open mouth of poor little Sarah Patterson, were warning enough for the faint of heart. Actually, the horror is secondary to the remarkable Grimms-Fairy-Tale ambience which the film successfully sustains from beginning to end. And, in keeping with the original unexpurgated versions of most fairy tales, the sexual subtext is never far from the surface. Director Neil Jordan would further develop some of the subliminal themes in Company of Wolves in his 1994 production Interview with the Vampire.

Gemma Arterton & Saoirse Ronan To Play Mother & Daughter Vampires In Neil Jordan 's 'Byzantium'

We always feel that Neil Jordan is somewhat undervalued. Generally speaking, his films aren't giant hits (bar " Interview with the Vampire "), or gather awards attention (except for " The Crying Game "). And there are plenty of misfires across his career, from " Michael Collins " to " In Dreams " to the truly awful "The Brave One." But his work is consistently interesting, and sometimes downright superb, particularly when he delves into more fantastical territory: we're not sure that films like " The Company of Wolves " and the recent " Ondine " ever quite got the attention they deserved. The Irish writer-director is currently coming off the back…
