Finding Amanda (2008)

Taylor Peters is een schrijver en producer van televisieseries. Hij gokt, drinkt en gebruikt drugs, maar dat is nu "onder controle". Hij wedt alleen nog maar op paardenraces. Als zijn vrouw er achter komt dat hij nog gokt, verlaat ze hem. Om zijn vrouw terug te winnen, gaat Taylor naar Las Vegas om zijn 20-jarige nichtje, die daar prostituee is en verslaafd is, te zoeken en haar te laten rehabiliteren.

Written and directed by Peter Tolan, FINDING AMANDA is an autobiographical black comedy that can be painful to watch even if the audience doesn't know it's based on true events. But even so, this film is far closer to SIDEWAYS than to REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. Peter slides deeper and deeper into various kinds of addiction, but there's plenty of dark humor to be found when he tries to convince his niece of her troubles. Snow is bubbly and naive as Amanda, and Peter Facinelli is wonderfully oily as Amanda's loser boyfriend. In a small role, Steve Coogan (HAMLET 2) shines as a casino employee who keeps giving Peter money.

additions under control. Sure, he still plays the horses every now and then, but the less that his wife Lorraine (Maura Tierney) knows about that, the better. When Lorraine's sister discovers that her 20-year old daughter Amanda (Brittany Snow) has been working as a Las Vegas prostitute, she calls the family together for an emergency meeting. Later, during the ride home, Lorraine discovers Taylor's racing stubs stashed in the glove compartment and announces that she is filing for divorce. Desperate not to lose his wife, Taylor hatches an ingenious plan to win back her affections and prove he's a changed man: he'll travel to Las Vegas, locate Amanda, and take her to rehab in Malibu. It's a noble plan indeed, but can a man given to such vices truly exercise the Herculean restrain needed to avoid the blackjack tables and accomplish his noble mission while traveling through the sordid streets of a city built on the very foundation of temptation?
