Gideon, a Christmas angel, is sent, by Santa, to help Ginny Grainger. Ginny is a cynic, and she hates Christmas. She and her family (husband, Jack and two kids, Caleb and Abbie) have fallen on hard times, making it even harder to believe in anything that can't be seen. With help from Abbie, and a trip to see Santa Claus himself, can Gideon find a way to make Ginny believe again?
In this heartwarming Christmas film, a young mother, Ginny Grainger (Mary Steenburgen), rediscovers the joy and beauty of Christmas thanks to the unshakeable faith of her six-year-old daughter (Elisabeth Harnois) and Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), her very own guardian angel. With Gideon's help, Ginny learns that the season is about her family and other people she loves, rather than the presents and materialism heaped on by a consumerist society.
The "magic" in One Magic Christmas is often (and surprisingly) of the "black" variety. Like Jimmy Stewart before her, worn-out wife and mother Mary Steenburgen wishes that she'd never been born. And like Stewart, Steenburgen is visited by a guardian angel, in this case the western-garbed Harry Dean Stanton.
