Number 5, one of a group of experimental military robots, undergoes a sudden transformation after being struck by lightning. He develops self-awareness, consciousness, and a fear of the reprogramming that awaits him back at the factory. With the help of a young woman, Number 5 tries to evade capture and convince his creator that he has truly become alive.
When a laser-armed Department of Defense robot named Number 5 gets zapped by a lightning bolt, he "malfunctions" and starts spouting peace slogans and developing a human-like consciousness. Naturally, the newly pacifist machine wants out of the military and escapes. As a frantic search for the creature begins, Number 5 settles down in his new home, with a gentle young woman named Stephanie (Ally Sheedy), who has every intention of holding on to her find, teaching Number 5 about popular culture and other mysteries of life. In order to prevent his capture by the military--who view Number 5 as an armed-and-dangerous weapon--the pair must convince his inventor, a reclusive scientist named Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), that he is truly alive and more than just a metal machine. Struck by lightning, an endearing little robot known only as "Number 5" escapes from an experimental electronics firm. Technician Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg) and his indecipherable East Indian assistant, Ben Jabituya (Fisher Stevens), set out to locate Number 5 before the military can go through with its plans to destroy the robot. Number 5 takes refuge with loopy Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy), who is convinced that the mechanical man is an extraterrestrial. Hoping to teach the "alien" all about Earth, she fills Number 5's memory banks with reams of pop culture -- and then the real fun begins.

As a child of the .80.s, I think I.m pre-programmed to automatically react with fond nostalgia and perhaps a quote or two when hearing a reference to the 1986 film Short Circuit . So it.s with conflicting emotions that I share an update on the subject of the reboot that.s in the works. On one hand, we could all sigh at the topic of yet another attempt to squeeze some more juice out of a beloved film from yesteryear (I.m intentionally ignoring the Sheedy/Guttenberg-less sequel). And on the other hand, maybe the world needs another movie about a big-hearted malfunctioning robot with a craving for input and an appreciation for The Three Stooges . One of the things that made Short Circuit work was that kids thought it was funny and wanted to be friends with Johnny 5, and grown-ups also thought it was funny and found it entertaining.
